How to Turn a Stocking Loop

Picture
Creating a matching loop from the same fabric as the stocking makes great use of the excess fabric & ties the whole project together.

Each of my patterns includes a pattern piece for the loop & it is quite easy to make with a single row of straight stitching.

I have used many types of specialized turning devices over the years but always fall back to this method whenever possible.  It is very basic, utilising the simplest tools & consequently the easiest.

Tools needed:

String
Safety Pin

Secure the string to the safety pin

Cut a piece of string (approx, an arm's length)

Make a loop at one end & knot

Slip the loop through the eye of the safety pin & pull the other end of the string through the loop

Turn the Loop

Hold the loop vertically, exposing the opening & drop the safety pin into the opening

The weight of the pin acts like an anchor & drops straight through to the other side

Attach the safety pin to the seam

Close the pin & insert back into the opening

Hold the string & gently pull, while ...

The loop is ready to be added to your project

Hang onto the turning aid until it is needed again...I have several hanging in my studio with various sized safety pins (small for the narrower items, all the way up to a Kilt pin to turn wider items).

Even faster...

Place the string first & then sew the seam...be sure to keep the string clear of the stitching
